A scale model, or marquette, of the proposed monument.
The monument
The proposed monument was designed by artists Christoper R. Gowell of Eliot, Maine, and Steven Alden Carpenter of York, Maine. It will be approximately 14 feet wide, 20 feet long and approximately 16 feet high, cast in bronze at Gowell's foundry and set upon a block of Maine granite.Titled "Sudden Gale," the monument depicts two fishermen aboard a classic dory in rough seas. One fisherman rows while the other, in the stern, looks forward. The boat is filled with gear and the results of the fishermen's catch. Seagulls gather at the bow of the boat.
The proposed site concept has the monument set in an area with views of the waterfront, landscaped by groupings of natural stone outcroppings that allow visitors to circulate freely around the monument, or to sit in peaceful contemplation. The site will be handicapped accessible and designed in a way that will encourage visitors to linger.
The City of Portland has committed to providing a suitable site for the monument in the Ocean Gateway area, although the specifics of that site are still under discussion.
"We want the viewer to experience the nature of the precarious livelihood of the people who risk their lives to bring their crucial harvest to our shore."
