The Maine Fishermen's Monument
Historically, Maine's commercial fishing industry has played a critical role in our nation's and Maine's development. Today, despite facing many challenges, the state's commercial fishing industry remains vital to Maine's culture and economy. As such, the commercial fishing industry must be supported and deserves to be commemorated for its past, present and future contributions to our state and country. It is therefore fitting that a monument commemorating Maine's commercial fishing heritage be erected and dedicated in the City of Portland - Maine's largest city and largest commercial fishing port.
"For generations, Mainers have made a life by going to sea in pursuit of fish. We have rowed, sailed and steamed by day and night, in summer and in winter, from Kittery to Eastport. The fortunes of our communities and the lives of our fishermen are a tapestry. We are humbled by the ocean's beauty and grateful for all the ways it has enriched our lives, but we are ever-mindful of the awesome toll it all too often extracts from us."
